Following complaints from the Messy Train Land blog team about the state of lifts at Wimbledon Station, South West Trains issued the following response:
[The Wimbledon Station Manager] advised the lifts are checked and cleaned daily however, we are not able to give the lifts a thorough wash as there is a danger that excess water will fall on the electrics, this limits the extent of how we can clean the lifts to the required standard.
The lifts originally had rubber floor covers but over a period of time these became a trip hazard (through normal usage). These were replaced with Aluminum chequer plate but unfortunately it does not form a seal around the edge, so when the lifts are misused in an anti social manner it sometimes leaves a bad odor that is difficult to clear. The good news is that the lifts at Wimbledon are due to be replaced between 2011 & 2012.
